To mark the ambitious mission of Save Hokersar Srinagar under the initiative ‘Tawazun' , J&K Department of Wildlife Protection Hokarsar organized a Cleanliness Drive to spread awareness among the students and residents about the significance of saving wetlands of Kashmir, reviving and restoring them since wetlands are vital not only for the health and ecology of our water system, but also because they are part of our culture and ethos.
Apart from their ecological, biological, cultural, and tourism aspects, wetlands are strongly tied to the subsistence needs of local inhabitants. They attract a vast variety of migratory birds from Siberia, Northern Europe, and Central Asia throughout the winter months, adding to the splendour of the area.
Due to silt deposition, human involvement such as encroachments, farming, and habitation grazing, these wetlands have been severely impacted. Wetland management has thus become crucial because many of these wetlands are being drained or encroached upon.
Keeping the same objective in mind,a total of ten students from classes 9th and 10th from Doon School Srinagar participated in the programme organised by the department.
Students and authorities educated residents about the need of resource conservation, and they altogether took an oath to spread the word.
